Royal Worcester porcelain — The first production of porcelain in Worcester took place in An eminent surgeon, Dr John Wall, perfected the secret recipe for the production of soft paste porcelain and a factory was founded on the banks of the river Severn. The river was essential for transporting both production materials and wares. Having gained a reputation for producing quality tableware, Worcester flourished under the guideance of a series of owners. All made improvements to the manufacture of porcelain, adding new glazes, shapes and designs. The Worcester factory was able to engage the services of excellent artists and some of the finest porcelain was produced there. Royal patronage was added, firstly by king George III in and has been continually reviewed and renewed with each change of monarch. In The Royal Worcester porcelain company was formed. The factory continued producing mainly tableware during the nineteenth century and a few figurines were introduced, mostly by James Hadley. By the start of the twentieth century sales were in decline and in the factory went into receivership.
Worcester Porcelain Marks
Royal Worcester is one of the oldest English porcelain companies in the world, if not the oldest itself. As such, over the years, many different backstamps have been used to identify different patterns and pieces. Unlike many other brands, Royal Worcester stuck to a system where a standard core stamp was used, coupled with special markers that indicated a more precise date.

Over the years factory marking of pieces has evolved and although marks vary from impressed and hand written to printed emblems, the majority of bone china produced was marked in the way described below. The standard printed factory mark, included the number 51 in the centre that refers to the year when the Worcester Porcelain Company was founded by Dr John Wall. The mark can appear in any colour, and on a variety of materials. Between and specific indications of the year of manufacture are rare but may sometimes be found in the form of the last two figures of the date, eg 75 for , printed below the standard mark.
From a letter system was also used to indicate the year of manufacture. From the crown sits down to fit the circle. This system continued until when 24 dots are arranged around the standard printed mark. From a small star or asterisk appears below the mark. An extra dot was added each year until when 11 dots are arranged around the standard printed mark. This continued until when there were 9 dots and the triple circle mark. Between and no date code was used in the mark. This series of codes continued until the s when the dots are arranged around the R signifying registered in a circle.
The date included is the year of introduction of the design, not the date of manufacture.

From Royal Worcester introduced a different shape as the date code for each preceding year, until , when they started the method of adding an additional dot for each year. This method continued until when there were nine dots arranged around three interlinked circles.
