Using the “Speed Dating” Model to Enhance Student Learning
At the start of a speed dating session, students are given a topic or question to discuss. Each student sits facing another student. Students typically remain in their partner-groups for about minutes before the instructor, who must keep time, notifies them to move on to their next partner. Once students rotate to their new partners, the timer is reset and students again discuss their topic or question, this time with a new discussion partner. The session proceeds in this manner, with each student thus getting the opportunity to interact with multiple other students in a series of brief one-on-one discussions Murphy, Depending on the goals of the session, the instructor may prepare just a few broad questions for students to discuss Murphy, Rather than preparing the answer sheets themselves, instructors can assign their preparation as a homework or in-class activity, as creating the answer sheets serves as another opportunity for students to learn the material Danczak, Another pre-session preparatory activity is to provide students with time to write on the topic to organize their ideas before they begin to converse with their peers Murphy, In other variations, students may be required to take a stand on a topic, or they may be asked to incorporate points made by other students into their position as the session goes along Murphy, Conversely, speed dating sessions prevent dominant students from monopolizing class discussion time Murphy,

After 15 years in the classroom, I have some thoughts about ice-breaker activities:. And so, it turns out that the social risk is high and the social reward is low. Additionally, too often the person leading the activity has not thought through the point of the activity and how it fits into the course. And going around the room talking about what you are studying or what you ate for dinner last night is boring. No one cares.
In some ways, I think a bad icebreaker leaves the impression that the course will be unengaging and unimportant. Still, the ice-breaker is widely used because it is important. Spending all of our time on the first day of class merely reading through the syllabus, or worse, dismissing students early with no meaningful learning experience or connection to the course, is a missed opportunity.
So, it is my opinion that we should be looking for high quality ice-breakers that check many of the boxes that we hope to accomplish on the first day of class. This activity seems to work for me and my students are surprised by how much fun they have at it.

She was eager to try a new strategy to engage her students and get them to interact with each other in English about academic content. In order to gather formative assessment data before the final exam, she needed them to use English to express their content understanding. Because this was a test review, not an introductory activity, she strategically placed students with the same languages on the same side of the U, so they would not be paired during the activity.

I know this is a rare feat, especially in the secondary setting, but I am not exaggerating. Speed dating is the real deal. It tricks students into learning and will make your teacher heart warm and fuzzy inside. The best part is that this lesson model is so versatile that you can find a creative way to use it for just about anything!
I facilitate this lesson to help my students practice their rhetorical skills during our unit on persuasion. To do this, I use a variety of topics, ranging from silly to serious, so that the debates spark some friendly controversy. Speed debating is great way to incorporate a lot of practice to familiarize students with the strategies and structure of debate. Just like speed debating, this strategy involves mini discussions over essential questions. This helps students critically think, hear different perspectives, and articulate their ideas in a low-risk setting.
I like to use speed discussion during thematic units, as a way to facilitate synthesis of different texts. This strategy is also a great way to expose students to different ideas and perspectives during the pre-writing phase of the writing process.

This is the first in a series of three posts about activities I usually do on the first days of class. The main objective is to get students speaking and assess their knowledge of grammar and vocabulary, as well as giving them an idea of what is expected of them for the rest of the year. Single men and women attend an event, usually in a bar or a club. During the event, they will have the opportunity to meet a series of potential partners.
As the term speed-dating suggests, they only have three minutes to impress each person before rotating to the next. In the classroom we do the same but eliminate the romantic part! So basically they have three minutes or any other time limit you wish to establish to speak to one person before moving on to the next. This technique works wonders on the first day as it breaks the ice just perfectly.
Once again we selected the more general questions which we believed were more suitable for our classes. A great success! The only drawback to the activity is the noise level; so to draw their attention to when the three minutes are up, you need a loud voice or an alarm! You are commenting using your WordPress.
